In May, we planned a trip to Zion National Park with one major goal in mind: to hike The Subway. After buying harnesses, rope, wetsuits, and other gear that we needed (and trying the gear out), we felt prepared to hike the canyon. We had to get a permit to hike the Subway (which are given in very limited numbers), so we made sure to be there super early when the permits were being issued. We managed to get a permit and even managed to meet some friends that were willing to work out a shuttle deal with us (so we didn't have to pay for a shuttle to drop us off at the top of the canyon). We parked my car at the bottom of the canyon and rode in their car to the top of the canyon. The hike was beautiful as we worked our way down into the canyon. There were a couple of rappelling spots and spot that we had to swim through in the slot canyon. The final rappel was down into The Subway itself. The floor of the Subway had slippery moss that made it nearly impossible to walk. Elizabeth and I even did waterslide races because it was so slick. I realized near the bottom that I had forgotten my car keys in the car of the people that drove us to the top of the canyon, so I was really nervous that we would all be stranded at the bottom. I ran the rest of the hike so that I could catch up with the group in front of us to hitch a ride to the top. The Subway was such beautiful hike that it made us want to hike other slot canyons in Zion! Hopefully we get to do more next year.
